I thought that I would start up simple yet fun conversation for this, and hopefully you all will join in. (It is summer and the WC is over so I don’t have an excuse to let my mind wonder for a couple of hours in the middle of the day)
I have a BS in Computer Science Engineering (also have a degree in Poli Sci and History). While my engineering degree taught me a lot of things like DBs, for loops, data structures, languages, OS’s, search trees, etc. And it even taught me that software and hardware are pretty pointless unless it solves real world problems. But I never expected to learn some of the strange things that I have nor done some of things that I have.
I thought that I would list some of them in the hopes that others might add in their strangest or at least most fun/unusual things that you have done for your software job. i.e. things that Engineering school didn’t teach you.
- Lately- writing scripts and editing videos
- How the gates at parking garages work (I was at a city parking garage, across the street of the police station and city hall in a coat and tie taking apart a parking gate. The city is a suburb of Detroit)
- How gas pumps work, how to push all of the buttons to turn them on
- How to install a gas pump (fortunately didn’t have to have it actually pump gas)
- How to create a bamboo bicycle
- How to have a roomba cut cake (I actually assigned my interns to do that)
- Creating a system that will text you if your car goes over 80 MPH and give you the location and time stamp. (I have two teenagers and probably should go and find the code for this)
