A friend and I are working on a dual-socket server build with two Q80-30s. We aren’t able to get the system to post, unfortunately. We have 2x KSM32RD8/16MRR installed for memory (we plan to order enough to populate all 16 slots once we have the system successfully booting). There’s no VGA output, and the serial output is just printing the same thing over and over again:
Can you try accessing the other SOL consoles using ipmitool? e.g.: ipmitool .... sol activate instance=1 ipmitool .... sol activate instance=2 ipmitool .... sol activate instance=3
There might be errors being reported on the SCP (PMpro/SMpro) console.
We noticed some physical damage to the motherboard, getting it RMA’d and hopefully that solves the issue, if not then I’ll definitely check the other consoles!
Back with some bad news. We swapped the motherboard and are still seeing the same issue. I tried connecting to the other consoles but ipmitool doesn’t like it; connecting with instance=1 works and shows the same console output as before with the repeated memory info and “CP: …” lines, but connecting with instance=2, 3, or 4 gives “Info: SOL Payload activation limit reached”
I think the next step might be to verify that the ebay CPUs are actually good. What’s the cheapest system that we can plug a Q80-30 into and be reasonably confident that it will power on if the CPU is functional?
As a final update here, the MP72-HB0 is simply not a functional product. We acquired an ALTRA8UD and tested both of the Q80-30s and they both booted fine (Same DIMMs and storage and chassis as we tested with before). If anyone is thinking about acquiring the Gigabyte dual-socket motherboard, I would advise reconsidering.
