Sustained spam attack - new user rule changes

Hi all,

As you may have noticed, we have been under a sustained spam attack today - what appears to be an organized group are connecting with multiple IP addresses from somewhere in India and creating spammy topics and replies.

We have changed new user settings to combat this - I understand this may cause inconvenience, and I apologise for that - hopefully these new configurations will be short term:

  1. New user requests now require moderator approval before posting
  2. New users will only be able to reply once in a thread they create, until someone else participates in that thread
  3. I have added a “cool down” period for new users who create topics: they will not be able to create another topic or reply for a few minutes after their initial post

I hope that this gets resolved quickly, and that we see things return to normal around here soon!
