New Jeff Geerling review

Check out @geerlingguy 's new review of an Ampere Telco edge server.

There are a lot amazing stats in the video, namely 4 tera transfers/sec. We are now using Terra for this one socket device, wow.

BTW he is getting close to 1.0 M subscribers, help push him over the edge.

Heh, thanks!

Maybe I could build a 1 million core supercluster for 1 million subscribers!

I will bring it up with our Marketing people. That would only be 5200 192 core machines.

Anyone to answer to that comment?

Hahaha!

Just need to rent an entire warehouse to build it

When do you hit 1M subscribers? You might need more than one server to do it! Although core counts continue to increase…

Dave.

By my estimate, if I continue along the same trajectory with subscribers as I have for a couple years, it’ll be in 2026.

Do you think a 1024 core AmpereOne SuperNova will be here by then?

Can’t comment on future product roadmaps - which for me is easy, I’m kept in the dark  But yeah, you’ll need at least 1,000 or 2,000 nodes - that’s quite the budget!

Dave.

I responded (but probably shouldn’t have) - the V2 lowers core count and increases power envelope - it targets HPC workloads, so gives higher performance out of the box (for example, it supports SVE2, AmpereOne is still relying on NEON for SIMD), but that comes at a cost of fewer cores per socket, and higher power per core under load.
